How many feet is a roll of wire fence? ›

As a rule, you should set fence posts about 6' to 8' apart. The spacing of the posts depends on the type of fence you build, the terrain, the purpose of the fence, and other such factors. Set the corner or end post first. Then stretch a line from each corner or end post to align all the posts in between.

Privacy: A height of at least 6 feet (1.8 metres) is generally recommended. Security: Fences between 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 metres) offer better security. Decorative: Heights can vary from 3 to 4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 metres) for aesthetic purposes. Containment: For pets, consider a height appropriate to the species.

The typical spacing of posts is between 8′ and 12′. The distance should be determined by the type of fence and the amount of support that the fence needs in order to stay taught.

Dig post hole so diameter of the hole is 3 times the width of the post (i.e., the hole for a 4” wood post should be about 12 inches wide). The depth of the hole should be 1/3-1/2 the post height above ground (i.e., a 6-foot tall fence would require a hole depth of at least 2 feet).

You'll need to bury the garden fence about 1 foot underground.

Always aim to bury at least one third of your fence post underground. So, for an 8' high fence post, ensure a minimum of 2' is underground. Type of fence - the type of fence matters. For example, decorative fences might not need as much depth as privacy fences.

As shown in the illustration at the top of the page, fencing should be at least 2 feet high to prevent rabbits from jumping over. To keep them from burrowing under, bury at least 3 to 6 inches (the deeper the better) and bend the buried portion away from plantings.

Typically, a fence of 4 to 6 feet is a proper height, unless otherwise specified by local codes and regulations.
