Can I pull a trailer with a higher GVWR than my truck? ›

The GVWR of the trailer should never exceed the tow rating of the tow vehicle, even if the trailer is not loaded to its maximum capacity.

Max towing capacity should not be taken lightly. Exceeding what your vehicle is designed to tow can strain your engine and transmission, accelerate brake wear, damage your tires and even warp your chassis. This could in turn trigger catastrophic failure while driving and could lead to property damage or serious injury.

If that number is greater than 26,000 pounds AND whatever you're towing has a total GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds, then you need a Class A CDL to operate that tow vehicle, whether that vehicle is a car, truck, or tractor.

We recommend you stay below 10% of the maximum towing capacity to account for miscalculations and shifting loads.

Many RVers are strict followers of the 80% or 80/20 rule of towing, and it's a great rule to live by if you want to ensure you don't overload your tow vehicle. The 80% towing rule is less of a “rule” and more of an idea: don't pull a trailer with a GVWR that is more than 80% of your vehicle's maximum towing capacity.

Try to stay 20-25% below your towing capacity for a safer ride. The trailer's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) should be under your truck's towing capacity. The tongue weight of a trailer, or hitch weight, will be about 10-15% of the trailer's GVWR.

Increasing Towing Capacity

Stiffer springs, heavy-duty shock absorbers, and a larger radiator can all help support a heavier load. Increase the Curb Weight: Increasing the curb weight of your vehicle can help increase your vehicle's towing capacity.

Remember, the total weight of your fully loaded trailer can't exceed the listed GVWR. Be sure to load your trailer properly and follow the proper air pressure recommendations listed on your trailer's VIN label or Tire Placard.

GVWR and towing capacity may seem similar, but they should be considered differently. The GVWR helps determine tow capacity because a truck can only tow as much as its rating permits. But remember that only the vehicle's weight, fluids, cargo, and passengers contribute to the gross vehicle weight rating.

The total weight of your trailer must not weigh more than the car's maximum towing capacity (MTC).

The GVWR and GAWRs provided by the incomplete vehicle manufacturer can be changed by a final-stage manufacturer or alterer. However, if the ratings are changed, there must be some analysis, testing or documentation to back-up the re-rating.
